Valedictorian Speech

My last speech in KR. Here is the transcript just for memory sake. Almost teared at the end... when i said "Dearest Kent Ridge Hall..." Enjoy.

A very good evening to Prof Shih, members of the SCRC and JCRC, guests, alumni, and my fellow Kent Ridgeans. It is my great honour to stand before you and deliver this valedictorian speech, to bid farewell to our beloved hall and friends on behalf of the graduating batch of 2005. Time, it passes by as slow as a snail when you are studying, flies past when you are having fun. But when you stay in hall, it disappears with a blink of the eye. It seems like just yesterday when we first stepped into hall. But it is within this fleeting moment that we forge ever-lasting friendships and an undying passion for the hall.

Tonight, we celebrate the memorable years that we spent together.

Looking back at the past years, we can indeed treasure what we have done for the hall and what the hall has done for us. All the moments of glory in clinching IHG golds, the feeling of nostalgia as we leave our old home in lower kent ridge road, the fun and laughter in watching productions and dinner and dance, the tears we shed for each other, the crazy things that we do in block events, also not forgetting the late night gossips and suppers, where we talked about almost everything except for studies, all these and more, defined our time in hall.

Hall is like a huge melting pot of emotions for all of us. It is in hall where we experienced the most joyous of occasions, the saddest of disappointments, and the fieriest most intense of passions. Through our participation in hall, we experienced achievements and failures, these not only built up our characters, but also made us bond more closely to the hall and to one another. These are things that we never learn in lectures and tutorials, and these are the things that complete our tertiary education.

I admit. It is agonizing to juggle between studies, hall and family. It is no mean feat to complete 3 years and, 4 years for some, of active participation in hall. But I urge all of you not to give up on hall but to spur on. For diamonds cannot be polished without abrasion. Gold cannot be purified without fire, and with that experience our lives become better, not bitter. We had done it. So can you.

Hall is the place where we seek our dreams. The aspirations to be like seniors, or even do better than them, motivated us to try out all that we could. We started to believe that we could do whatever we have ever dreamed of doing, here in Kent Ridge Hall. Through the years, many of us achieved what we have always aspired to do in the fields of sports, culture, and leadership roles. Many more of us have also experienced activities which we wouldn’t have otherwise taken part in if we were not in hall. Coming to hall is not about being highly talented or skilled, it is about developing talents and skills you don’t even know you have.

Kent Ridge hall has become our home, sometimes, we don’t realize the importance of it till we are leaving. Emptiness will fill our hearts as we say goodbye. But, nevertheless, it is time for us to bid farewell and take our leave, and the scores of characters will be missed dearly, together with the many personalities.

It is with fondest affection, that we hand over the burning torch to you, and sincerely hope that you, being endowed with the same pride and passion for the hall that we share, will step up and bring this hall to greater heights.

Dearest Kent Ridge Hall, thank you for the good times. We will miss you dearly.
